3 Questions Everyone Asks About Lawn Care

Feb 17, 2020 | Blog

Summer is just a few short months away.

Let’s repeat that: SUMMER IS JUST A FEW MONTHS AWAY!

Which means in no time we’ll be able to shed those snow pants and parkas in lieu of shorts and t-shirts. And as we prepare for our favorite few months of the year (sometimes it feels like just a few weeks), we wanted to remind you of the questions we find everyone asking about their lawn care.

Or at least the questions everyone should be asking.

How much time do I actually spend taking care of my lawn?

According to the Chicago Tribune, the average American spends 70 hours per year on their lawn and garden. Assuming that our lawns are only maintainable for 6 months a year, May through October, that breakdown would look as follows:

  • 11.6 Hours Per Month
  • 2.9 Hours Per Week
  • .41 Hours Per Day

How much do I spend on equipment related to lawn care?

If you’re a homeowner, you realize that it costs money to maintain your lawn whether you do it yourself or hire a professional. But what does that cost really look like? Below is a breakdown of some of the estimated costs you have to maintain your lawn:

Initial investment:

  • $500: Lawn Mower
  • $150: Weed Whipper
  • $100: Blower

Ongoing investment:

  • Gas: $1-3 Per Job
  • Equipment Maintenance: $100 Per Year
  • Fertilizer: $35 Per Year
  • Water Cost: $50 Per Month

While these numbers are estimations and subject to the size of your lawn, and other variables, they begin to paint the picture of what it actually costs to maintain your lawn each Summer.

What would I do if I didn’t have to maintain my lawn?

The questions above yield tangible results. but what about the intangible? What about the opportunity cost of mowing your lawn all through the Summer. Since most people aren’t home during the week (with work, school, etc.), lawn maintenance typically occurs on the weekends, which is prime time to do other, enjoyable activities. If you didn’t have to mow you could do one of the following.

  • Golf
  • Rest
  • Travel
  • Boat
  • Hike

This list has unlimited potential, yet the point is the same. If you don’t have to mow your lawn, you have the freedom to do whatever you’d like to do with that newfound time.
